Many high-profile celebrities have been diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder, which was formerly known as manic depression. More than 5.7 million adult Americans, or about 2.6% of the US population, age 18 and older have been diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder, according to the National Institute of Mental Health.

Bipolar Disorder has varying levels of severity, and in critical cases, there is a high risk of suicide and self-harm. This is a kind of mental illness that does not discriminate based on money, fame, or privilege. Despite all the success and esteem, many celebrities suffer from bipolar disorder.

Here’s a look on some of the most famous celebrities diagnosed as bipolar. Many of them have gone on to become advocates of mental health.

    Demi Lovato was diagnosed with bipolar symptoms when she entered a rehab at the age of 22. Her take on bipolar diagnosis: “I felt relieved when I found out. Like I'm not completely crazy; there's a medical reason for all of it." After her diagnosis, Lovato soon started volunteering with "Be Vocal: Speak Up for Mental Health" in 2015. She believes that "it's possible to live well, feel well, and also find happiness with bipolar disorder or any other mental illness they're struggling with.

    Mariah came find that she was bipolar in 2001 but didn’t go public about it until 2018. She told the People Magazine, “Until recently I lived in denial and isolation and in constant fear someone would expose me. It was too heavy a burden to carry and I simply couldn't do that anymore. I sought and received treatment, I put positive people around me and I got back to doing what I love — writing songs and making music.”
  3. Catherine Zeta Jones
    Catherine Zeta Jones has Bipolar II Disorder. She had periods of mood swings followed by an intense period of stress with her husband’s medical condition and other family drama. He was battling stage IV throat cancer. Catherine on speaking about her Bipolar II, “If my revelation of having bipolar II has encouraged one person to seek help, then it is worth it. There is no need to suffer silently, and there is no shame in seeking help."
  4. Russell BrandRussell Brand had been diagnosed with ADHD and Bipolar Disorder during his teenage years. He struggled with binge eating, substance abuse, and alcohol. He has abstained from drug use since 2002 and Russell has acted as a sponsor for others, plus helped raised funds for Focus 12, a drug treatment program, in Britain.
Bipolar Disorder is a lot more than the emotional ups and downs that everyone experiences. It is a lifelong disorder that requires medical care and support. But as these celebrities’ advocates show, you can still lead a positive and satisfied life as Bipolar should neither control you nor define you.
